Chloroform - Dangerous Degredation

What happened?:
(Reported at another institution) An aged, undated bottle of chloroform was found in a laboratory. Records check of the lot number returned a manufacturing date in 1996. EHS staff opened the bottle under a chemical fume hood and an off-white vapor cloud was released from the bottle. This was presumed to be a mixture of phosgene (acutely toxic by inhalation and corrosive) and hydrogen chloride gas (corrosive) which can form when chloroform is exposed to oxygen and heat or UV light. No one was harmed and the bottle was safely discarded.
