Aqua Regia Module

Student used aqua regia to wash glassware and shortly after filled a waste bottle with the liquid. Solution continued to release gasses and build up pressure. Waste bottle exploded spraying acid around. What went right? What could have been done differently? How can such incidents be prevented? The waste bottle was in a hood and the acid was contained. Do not put bubbling freshly made aqua regia into a sealed container. let stand overnight until bubbling ceases then put into a sizeable waste container.
